A call to reason

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Allah has said in his book: “And the good soil produces its fruit by the will of its Lord.”

Suffice to say that many times we recognize that which is superficial and ignore that which is in front of us. For many years, in the West, students have been leaving their countries in order to pursue Islamic Studies overseas, some have graduated, some have not (including myself). The big question I share today is regarding that which has been put forth on Western soil to bear fruit?

In other words, with all the recommendations from scholars and certificates from Universities circulating accompanied with much vigorous speech there is one factor which cuts through this masquerade which is simply: what have we produced?

Have we produced those who have memorized Qur’an?

Have we produced students who can teach Arabic?

Have we produced students who can teach the primers (Mutoon) in different Islamic Sciences?

Have we produced Khateebs who can shake the Minbar with Allah and the Messenger said?

Are we in the business of cloning sheep?

Just for us to know: Sh. Ibn Baaz produced, Sh. Muqbil produced, Sh. Al Albani produced, Sh. Uthaimeen produced and despite whether many may like it or not Sh. Yahya produced by Allah’s will.

So, is it just going to be a recommendation and qualification game or a numbers and followers game? Or is it about time that passing on this Prophetic inheritance and legacy is taken seriously?

Personally, I may be a skeptic but I am not impressed by recommendations and degrees. I met a Tableeghi who had a doctorate in ‘Aqeedah in Trinidad a few weeks ago, Yasir Qadhi has a masters from Madeenah and there are people who have certificates in Trinidad and speak ill of the major scholars.

Likewise, it may be that a filthy Khariji or someone who has shady character is highly recommended by a scholar of the Sunnah (as happened in Trinidad). Not that I am saying that the above matters are worthless however it is given its place once it corresponds to the reality.

So… O caller to Islaam, isn’t it time that your vision not be clouded by the fog and that you work to take ignorance from yourself and others?

Lastly I leave this post with the statement of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) where he said that Allah does not look at how you look like and your bodies but rather he looks at your HEARTS and your ACTIONS.

May Allah give us Tawfeeq to work HARD and produce a generation who can carry on Islam based on fundamental, sound knowledge.

A heartfelt advice to the sisters regarding the Islamic Dress Code.

💐 Gentle reminder to myself and my sisters 💐

After our Eid celebrations on Sunday, I felt the need to remind my sisters of a matter that affects us. A matter that we have to constantly be reminding ourselves of because it’s our nature to love pretty things and to dress up. This is the Islamic dress code.

Mankind is very forgetful and makes a lot of mistakes. His own self (nafs) tells him to do evil and the Shaytaan tempts him to commit sin. When bodies get sick and are afflicted with disease, one has to find a doctor who can prescribe the appropriate medicine so that the body may be restored to full health.

Similarly, souls and hearts may be afflicted with the diseases of desire and doubt, so people do things which Allaah has forbidden.

Because the diseases of the heart are so many and cause the spread of evil and corruption, Allaah has enjoined the believers to treat these diseases, by enjoining that which is good and forbidding that which is evil.

If the ummah fails to do its duty of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, wrongdoing and corruption will spread throughout the ummah, and it will deserve the curse of Allaah. For Allaah cursed those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved because they failed in this important duty. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of Dawood (David) and ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). That was because they disobeyed (Allaah and the Messengers) and were ever transgressing beyond bounds.
They used not to forbid one another from Al-Munkar (wrong, evildoing, sins, polytheism, disbelief) which they committed. Vile indeed was what they used to do [al-Maa’idah 5:78]

It is with this, that I remind myself first and you, that we as Muslim women have a dress code that has been prescribed for us. This is our protection from Allaah and an ibaadah to Him.

As women when we leave our homes we look in the mirror, it shouldn’t be to make sure I am looking nice enough but rather, am I covered fully.

This is our responsibility as Muslim women and as well for the mothers and fathers to make sure our daughters are covered properly especially the girls who have reached the age of puberty. We are guardians over them, we purchase their clothes, we wrap their khimars we check them to see that they are fully covered like us.

Now that Ramadhaan is over, we must remember how hard we tried to obey Allaah in that month, and that Allaah is to be obeyed in all His months. We have other months that are sacred where sinning in it is severe. So if we make ourselves accustomed to acting according to what we were commanded with, it won’t harm us which month we are in.

Therefor my reminder is basically for us to be reminded of our dress and the conditions for it’s correctness.

These conditions may be summarized as follows:

🌷The hijaab must cover her entire body

🌷It should be thick enough to conceal what is underneath it

🌷It should be loose-fitting, not tight

🌷It should not be so attractive as to call men’s attention to it

🌷It should not be perfumed

🌷It should not be a dress of fame and vanity (i.e., it should not be extravagant or excessively luxurious )

🌷It should not resemble the dress of men

🌷It should not resemble the dress of kaafir women.

Each of these conditions have either an ayah or hadith as evidence for it. Anyone requesting it , I will surely forward it Inshaaa Allaah.

May Allaah accept all our fasting, standing in extra prayer, charity, Duas , and other acts of righteousness seeking His Face.

May Allaah give us success in attaining the goal of fasting Ramadhaan, which was to Fear Allaah More, and this is by placing a barrier between ourselves and the punishment of Allaah by doing what he has commanded and staying away from what he has prohibited.

And may Allaah have mercy on us all. Aameen

Umm Talha

Seek the Paradise and seek refuge from the fire.

On the Authority of Anas Ibn Maalik (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:

“Whoever asks Allah for paradise thrice, the paradise says: Oh Allah enter him into paradise. And whoever seeks safety from the fire thrice, the fire says, Oh Allah keep him safe from the fire.”

Narrated by Imam At Tirmidhi.

Some benefits of Ramadaan. Part 1

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله

This is simply some speech of  Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Saalih Al ‘Uthaimeen regarding some of the benefits of fasting. May Allah help us to derive these benefits insha allah.

1. From the wisdom of fasting is that it is an act of worship for the sake of Allah which brings the slave closer to Allah through abandoning that which he loves and desires from eating, drinking and marital relations. Therefore the truthfulness of his Imaan, his complete servitude, his strong love for Allah and the hope for what he has becomes apparent. Because verily people do not leave off something he/she loves except for something that is greater in his/her sight. And because the believer knows that the pleasure of Allah through fasting, by abandoning his innate desires which he naturally loves he puts the love of his Lord above his desires.

For leaving it off is most severe when one desires it because his pleasure and rest is in leaving off all of these things for Allah. And for this reason many of the believers if they are beaten or imprisoned in order to break their fast (during the day) for one day in Ramadaan without any excuse they would not break their fast. And this wisdom regarding fasting is from the greatest of wisdom and from its most magnificent.

Benefit: (From Musa Millington): If we can leave off that which is lawful during the days of Ramadaan from food, drink and marital relations for the pleasure of Allah it shows that we can definitely make a concerted effort to abandon that which is forbidden in Islaam throughout the year for Allah’s pleasure.

Khutbah on establishing the religion

Given in Aldana street: 24/04/09

After Khutbatil Haajah..

For verily every Muslim whether male or female, good or evil, or upon the Sunnah or other than it seeks to establish this religion and have it as the most powerful in the land. This is because this religion is the religion of truth, the religion of Tawheed, the religion of the Prophets and the Messengers, the religion of justice, the religion og unity and brotherhood and guidance . Allah has said: “He is the one who has sent his Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth to conquer all religions and Allah is enough as a witness.”

Know Oh Muslims that Allah has not left anything out of his book. And he has made clear the way toward establishing the religion and making it firm upon the earth, for those who want it, with clarity. Allah has said in his book: “Allah has promised those who believe from you and do righteous deeds that he would make you inherit the earth as those before them inherited the earth and he would establish the religion that he is pleased with firmly on the earth and he will replace their fears with safety. They worship me and don’t associate partners with me.”

Allah has promised us that this inheritance of the earth, meaning to inheriti it after the righteous, and establishment of the religion, and safety of the Muslims never comes except with establishing the oneness of Allah and obidience to him and obidence to the Messenger . For Imaan and the oneness of Allah come with knowledge and good deeds are those deeds which go in congruence with the book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger . And the Messenger of Allah has mentioned in an authentic Hadeeth which showed the reasons for the weakness of the Muslims because of their deviating from the Shari’ah and their love for the Dunya said: “Allah will put humiliation over you, he will not lift it until you return to your religion.”

Yes, Return, for returning to what the Messenger of Allah was upon and his companions is the way to power and establishment of the religion. And to this Imam Malik said: “The last of this Ummah will not be rectified except by which the first of this ummah was rectified by.” And the one who is sucessful is the one who follows the way of the ancient ones (referring to the companions of the Messenger )

Second Khutbah:

Upon us Oh Muslims is to reflect on this verse and look at our condition with it. . And it is upon us to know that the power is with Allah alone. Allah hqas said: “Whomsoever wants power then Allah has all the power.” And Allah said: “And Allah has the power and his Messenger and the believers but the hypocrites do not know.” And Allah has made it Haraam for us to seek power from other than him like the way of the Hypocrites. Allah has said: “Do they wish for power from them then the power is with Allah only.” There is no power when one goes against the Shari’ah. There is no power in revolutions or fighting the Muslim rulers or democracy or elections. And not by innovations or partisanship that seperates the religion and makes the Muslims into groups and parties.

Power for the Muslims is only with obidience to Allah and worshipping him alone and obidience to the Messenger . And establishing the religion is through obidience of Allah and his Messenger . It isn’t by entering parliament and other than it. Therefore it is upon every Muslim to start with himself and submit totally to Allah and to worship him has one and to obey the Messenger and to make the book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger as a judge in his life. And he has to place emphasis on his family and his Masjid so that this good would spread. For there is no establishment of the religion on the earth until we establish it within ourselves and there is no inheritance of the earth got us unless we do good deeds that go according to the Shari’ah. Allah said: “Allah doesn’t change a people unless they change what is within themselves.”

Khutbah on Knowledge

Delivered in Aldana street Masjid 03/04/09 by Myself (Musa Millington)

Indeed all the praises is due to Allah, we praise him and we seek his assistance and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and our bad deeds, whoever Allah guides there is none that can misguide him and whoever is leads astray there is none that can guide him, and I bear witness there is no God other than Allah, He has no partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and messenger.

O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared. And die not except in a state of Islam. {Al-Imran:102}

O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allâh is Ever an All Watcher over you. {An-Nisa’:1}

O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (SAW) he has indeed achieved a great achievement. {Al-Ahzaab:70&71}]

For verily the best of speech is the book of Allah and the best of guidance is the guidance of the Messenger . And beware of newly invented matters for every newly invented matter is a Bid’ah and every Bid’ah is misguidance and all misguidance is in the hellfire.

Oh people, fear Allah and he will teach you what you don’t know. For verily this knowledge, knowledge of the Shari’ah is the most virtuous of knowledge, it is better than all the secular knowledge which people run after. How can it not be the most virtuous of all types of knowledge when our Lord has said: “Allah has borne witness that there is nothing worthy of worship but him and the angels and the people of knowledge, he maintains his creation with justice, there is nothing worthy of worship but him the all powerful the all wise.” And he said in his book also: “Allah raises those who believe amongst you those who have knowledge in levels.” And he has ordered his Prophet to seek increase in it. Allah has said: “Say (o Muhammad) my Lord increase me in knowledge.”

Yes, and whomsoever Allah wants good for he does not give him wealth or authority rather he gives him beneficial knowledge. Imam Al Bukhari has narrated in his Saheeh on the authority of Mu’aawiyah who said I heard the Messenger say: “Whomsoever Allah wants good for he makes him understand the religion.” What is better than knowing your Lord, knowing his attributes and actions, and his rights upon us and our rights upon him. And what is better than knowing the religion of Islam by which we worship Allah, and knowing what Allah has made lawful and unlawful. And also what is better than knowing the Messenger , the Messenger that was sent to all of mankind as a warner and giver of glad tidings. For whomsoever follows him has been guided and whomsoever opposes him is misguided.

He has also said in a Hadeeth narrated in Saheeh Al Bukhari: “The Ulama are the inheritors of the Prophets, for the Prophets didn’t leave a Deenar or a Dirham, rather they left knowledge as inheritance, and whomsoever takes hold of it he has taken hold of something great.” By Allah, many of us await the death of our parents in order to inherit their money and wealth. Rather we may even compete for this and kill each other for it. But knowledge has more value than this. Hence, why don’t we seek to learn Islam in the Masjid. And why don’t we try to read the Qur’an and the Ahadeeth of the Messenger and work hard to understand both? And verily this knowledge is easy for whomsoever Allah makes it easy for. Allah said: “And we have made the Qur’an easy to remember, is there anyone who will remember it?”

And the Messenger said: “The world and what is within it is cursed except for the rememberance of Allah and what is like it. A scholar and a student.” Listen Oh people. Our Prophet , the one who didn’t speak from his desires but rather by revelation. The one who fulfilled his trust, advised the Ummah and struggled for Allah a true struggle has informed us that the World and what is within it is cursed, all of it. For verily when a man strives for nobility or authority or land and other than this his striving is in futility and misguidance. For verily many waste their time and their lives chasing behind this world with it and what is within it being cursed. And as for the one who spends his time seeking beneficial knowledge and good deeds then Allah doesn’t render futile the actions of those who do good.

And know Oh Muslims that this knowledge is the religion. It is that which guides to the straight path and saves us from the path of those who have earned Allah’s wrath and those who are astray. As for those who have earned Allah’s wrath then they are the Jews who were given knowledge but it didn’t benefit them. And as for the ones who are astray they are the Christians who act without knowledge. For it is upon us Oh Muslims to act upon our knowledge. For knowledge is like a tree and actions are like the fruit. And there is no use for a tree that bears no fruit.

Second Khutbah:

In a Hadeeth narrated in Sunan Tirmidhi the Prophet said: Whomsoever goes upon a way seeking knowledge Allah will make it easy for him to go to the paradise. And a people do not congregate in a house from the houses of Allah to read the book of Allah and learn it between themselves except that peace descends upon them, mercy encompasses them, the angels cover them and Allah remembers them with those who are in his company.”

For whomsoever wishes to enter Jannah easily then it is upon him to seek knowledge, And whomsoever wants that peace descends upon him, and it is something that many try to find but they are unable to find it, upon him is knowledge, and if one wishes for Allah’s mercy then upon him is knowledge, and whomsoever wants to be in the company of the angels then upon him is knowledge, and whomsoever wishes that Allah mentions him in his company then upon him is knowledge and the circles of knowledge in the Masjid.

And beware, beware of turning away from knowledge and the circles of knowledge. Allah has said: And whomsoever turns away from my remember then he has a life of sadness and we bring him out on the day of judgement blind.” And Allah said: “And who is more oppresive than the one who is reminded about the signs of Allah and turns away from it.” For verily turning away from knowledge blinds the hearts that are within the chests. And it brings about sadness for him in the Dunya and the Aakhira. It also destroys him and drowns him in the darknesses of Shirk, innovation and sin. For how many have turned away from knowledge and they are unable to keep away from these three things? We ask why is it that they cannot have safety from these things? It is because they deserve the anger of Allah by leaving their religion (which is knowledge).

And Imam Al Bukhari has narrated that the Prophet saw three people who came to his talk. One of them saw a space then sat, the other sat behind the circle and the last one turned away. Then the Prophet said: “Should I give you news about these three, as for the first he leaned to Allah so Allah leaned to him, as for the second he was shy so Allah was shy from him and as for the third he turned away therefore Allah turned away from him.”

Alhamdu Lillah.
