Choices and holding onto the Sunnah

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله

From the belief in Allah’s decree is that mankind, in addition to being under Allah’s decree has choice. And the choices we make in each moment in our lives determines as to weather righteous deeds or evil deeds are written for us.

As Muslims we supposed to make choices in accordance to what Allah has commanded in his book. Practicing tawheed, the sunnah, engaging in acts of righteousness and distancing oneself from evil are choices that we must make in order to gain Allah’s pleasure. It is important that we make a conscious decision to completely submit to Allah ta’ala in order to obtain aid, certainty and fortitude from him.

But what are the instruments that would make us submit completely to Allah’s will?

These instruments are the two revelations which Allah has sent; his book the Qur’an and the Sunnah of our beloved Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) in accordance to the understanding of our companions and the scholars who nurture the Ummah upon sound knowledge. Every good comes from following them and every evil comes from abandoning them.

Hence all the evils of Shirk, innovations, partisanship, decadence, preference of the intellect over the texts etc. all come from us not holding on firmly to the Sunnah.

My next point is that amongst ourselves who say we are Salafi there is a prevalent misconception wherein we view the scholars as our target of submission rather than what Allah has sent down. Hence, instead of the scholars being in the position of stars (or a compass) which direct us to the correct understanding of the Qur’an and the Sunnah (in other words a means to an end) we take the scholars as the destination instead. And as Imam Ash Shatibi mentioned this is misguidance.

Now, some idiot may try to insinuate from my speech, and they know themselves well, that I am calling to the abandonment of the scholars. In no way I am advocating that but rather what is being advocated in these paragraphs is for the Salafis not to blind-follow anyone, whoever it may be.

And to do this, we must read more of the Qur’an and its Tafseer and the Ahadeeth and their explanations and we must take from reputable sources when understanding both. It is inappropriate and downright disheartening when someone sees the position of the Salaf and reputable scholars in plain sight and simply rejects it in order to aid and adhere to his/her group. Various words are used and a plethora of tricks are devised in order to steer others from the way of Allah. Information control, fellowships based upon sin and transgression and total disregard for valid scholarly opinions are features of such a sad state of affairs SIMPLY because we choose not to memorize, revise and reflect upon that which was revealed by Allah.

May Allah bring this as a guidance to many.
