Diseases of the Ummah

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الحمد لله رب العالمين و الصلاة و السلام على رسوله الكريم على نبينا محمد و على اله  و صحبه و سلم

My dear brothers and sisters,

This is a very long topic that can be spoken about and has been spoken about by many of the scholars and students of knowledge of the past and the present. In this post I will just attempt to summarize them in order that the reader has a brief synopsis regarding this matter.

Firstly, the origin of these diseases are two as Imam Al Barbahari mentioned in his book Sharh Us Sunnah. They are ignorance (resulting in doubts) regarding the religion which can be cured by knowledge and desires which can be cured by struggling against oneself, doing good deeds and befriending the righteous.

Secondly it is upon each individual to look within himself to see as to whether or not one or both of these diseases exist within his heart.

Thirdly, one can divide the diseases as follows:

1.Diseases wherein opposition to the Sunnah becomes manifest. And these are the primary diseases of Shirk (associating partners with Allah) and Bid’ah (innovation).

2. Diseases wherein one oppresses himself such as witnessing evil, tabbaruj (when women dress in a manner which doesn’t go according to the requirements of hijab), engaging in illegal transactions such as Riba etc. Some of the other diseases which are included within this category may not manifest themselves but rather dwell within the heart. Diseases such as pride, arrogance, selfishness, jealousy, hatred, love of power, extreme love of money, racism etc.

3. Diseases wherein one oppresses himself and another person by stealing from them, hitting them, back-biting, slandering, swindling them etc. And at times diseases of the heart can be manifested through the limbs.

Additionally, let us look at this scenario.

If someone is sick in bed because he has many physical diseases such as arthritis, H1N1, Ebola etc. and someone attacks his house he would be unable to defend it. He may have to crawl out of bed being barely able to even lift himself up.

So how about an Ummah that has so many spiritual diseases within them?!

We cry for Allepo and Burma but we supposed to cry more because we are incapable of helping them why?

Not because of the lack of military power, or lack of strategical expertise. Also it is not wise to throw the blame on the rulers because the reality is that they are ruling citizens whose souls are ridden with diseases and weaknesses that only ourselves and Allah know.

Why are we not able to give da’wah, give charity, do extra deeds of worship, seek Islamic knowledge, treat our womenfolk and children well and be exemplary Muslims?

Our sins.

Our souls are like the bodies in the hospitals that are bedridden with little activity. We are bedridden with the evil of ourselves and our actions and no eloquent speech or rounds of ammunition (as the cartoon caliphate thinks) would change that. It is a must that we return to Allah ‘Azza Wa Jall.

Furthermore what is worse is that the Salaf hid their sins and we are emboldened by them.

We take pride in being rude boys, gunslingers and players. And our sisters take pride in being fashionistas.

Many take pride in doing their innovation and Shirk.

Many embolden themselves with pride, boastfulness and overt racism.

And… we want to make Islam GREAT again.

Remember that physical diseases and epidemics destroy and annihilate human beings. However, these spiritual diseases have destroyed the Ummah. We must understand that advancing Islam does not come through:

-Unification with those who have opposed to Allah and his Messenger.

– Eloquent speech.

-“Modernising” Islam.

Note: There is nothing wrong with learning the worldly knowledge of any civilization and in fact the Muslims supposed to be the game changers in these worldly sciences. However, our ideological constructs must remain constant which is to follow the Qur’an and the Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf.

– Arms and Ammunition.

-Protests and marches.

-Sloganism etc.

Rather it is a must that the Muslims firstly recognize that all power is with the creator of the heavens and the earth. Secondly, we as individuals and an ummah at large must recognize that these diseases are present and thirdly we must find a solution to our individual and societal malaise using the book of Allah and the Sunnah.

و الله اعلم
