This is an old Arab saying which means that the more things change the more they truly remain the same. The phenomenon of ISIS maybe a phenomenon to Non-Muslims. However, for those who are familiar with Islamic History would know that these Khawarij are following their predecessors footstep by footstep, handspan by handspan especially in their declaration of an “Islamic State”.
Indeed their claim of an Islamic State which seperates from the Muslims in order to engage in combat with the latter has occured at different times of Islamic History. However, for the sake of this article I shall be as brief as possible since its goal is to be as straight to the point as possible without delving into any minor details.
The first instance occured during the rightly guided Caliphate of ‘Ali رضي الله عنه who was opposed by the Khawarij for allegedly not ruling by that which Allah revealed. Ibn Katheer clarified in Al Bidayah wan Nihayah that 12000 of them refused to live in his area and ended up establishing themselves in Haruura in order to fight the Muslims.
The second instance was with Abu Hamza Al Khariji who in the year 130 after the hijrah killed many of the Qurashi tribe, exiled its governer and ruled over the Prophet’s city for three months. This individual even highjacked the Minbar in the Prophet’s Masjid and gave a sermon (much in Abu Bakr Al Baghdaadi style) . Bear in mind that this was during the reign of the Caliph Abdul Malik Ibn Marwan.
Then there was the rule of the Wahhabis. No, not Shaikh Ul Islam Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab An Najdi, rather ‘Abdul Wahhab Ibn Rustum who established the ‘Ibaadeeyah, a sect of the Khawarij, in West Africa. Now, as a benefit, many of the Fatawa which the Deobandis, Brelawis and Sufis use as reference regarding the “Wahhabis” do not refer to Shaikh Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab who they accuse of being from the Khawarij but rather they refer to ‘Abdul Wahhab Ibn Rustum who was really a Khariji!
These are simply three examples of how the Khawarij set up “Caliphates” to oppose the Muslims. And verily thee Khariji ISIS Caliphate will fall soon by Allah’s will (that is why they always have to say that the Islamic State will remain, in order to reassure themselves). Our Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has promised in a Hadeeth narrated by Ibn Majah that anytime they appear they would be cut. Meaning that their establishment is an indication of their days, weeks or months being numbered. And they would continue to appear until the Dajjal appears among them.
May Allah ta’ala protect us from the trials that are apparent and hidden.
و صلى الله على نبينا محمد و على اله و صحبه و سلم
