A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

The first part of knowledge is deception

Ibn ‘Uthaimeen (رحمه الله) said:

It is appropriate that the student of knowledge should not be hasty regarding it (knowledge). And also in teaching and giving rulings and aspires to appear in front of the people before precision. As we see that from some contemporaries and friends are those who make aspire in giving rulings just by reading an issue (regarding knowledge).

Therefore, some of our scholars (رحمة الله عليهم) used to say (to them): Do not be hasty, and leave Fatwa in your time for those who are qualified to do so. It is safer for you that by Allah’s will that Allah would put for you acceptance regarding your rulings and that the people return to you. And that others would not try to jostle you (to give rulings) as you would not try to jostle those who are qualified to give rulings and more deserved of it.

  • Wait
  • Be proficient and
  • Be exact and then
  • Use your time to teach others.

And that is what I wanted that others pay mind to. Some of the students of knowledge, may Allah rectify them, because they read from the book of purification or the book of prayer they put out a treatise and they make footnotes on it, and make additions and subtract from it. And all of this is from the diseases that a student of knowledge must stay away from and he must preserve the rights of the people of knowledge. This is not specific to the scholar. It is general to all the scholars whether those who have come before or those who are contemporary.

And it is proper that the people should make effort in wanting the face of Allah. Because knowledge has in it:

  • Trials and
  • The Shaitaan is busy.

And from that which the scholars have mentioned is that the religion is spoilt by half a scholar and an ignorant worshipper. Therefore, the one who is half a scholar has knowledge, but he is deficient regarding it and therefore he changes his opinions readily (based upon blind-following and desires rather than evidences) therefore he is between success and destruction. At times he takes a correct opinion and therefore the people are amazed by its authenticity and correctness and then he gives them what destroys them. And if someone said to them (the people): Verily he was incorrect regarding this issue they would say: No, he is correct in other than it therefore he is from the people of knowledge.

Therefore, it is appropriate that the student of knowledge does not rush. And being half a scholar occurs during the period of seeking knowledge. And for this reason one of the proverbs is that the first of knowledge is overwhelming and convulsing and the last of it is fear and humility.

The first part of knowledge has deception in it therefore if Allah makes firm the feet of its companion and he threads upon it and completes it and (such a person) makes effort to not extract Ahadeeth and to not write and to not come forward in front of the people except that he is upon firm ground and clarity from his Lord.
