On the Authority of Abi Ayyub Al Ansari (Radiallaho Anhu) he said: The Messenger of Allah (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When you go to the Ghait (place to do ones numbers) do not face the Qibla with stool or urine, but turn to the left or the right”.

Shaikh Abdullah Al Bassam said: And Imam Malik, Ash Shafi’ee, Ahmad, Ishaaq who narrated from Abdillah ibn Umar, and Imam Ash Sha’bi explained further these two Hadeeth, Therefore they make it haraam to do this action in the open and say it is Halaal in buildings.

And this is the truth because it joins between the two evidences. Because saying it is totally Haram negates using the other Hadeeth and also saying it is totally Halaal has the same effect. And explaining it further joins the evidences, and one can act upon both, and this is the Haqq. Because whenever it is possible to join between the evidences one must do so before everything…”

  1. Taking a book or newspaper to read in the toilet

Question: When i need to go to the toilet (to answer the call of nature)- may Allaah honour you (O Shaykh)- I take with me a book or newspaper (to read) whilst I am in there. So is this permissible?

Answer: It is not permissible to take anything into the toilet which has the mention of Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) in it, be it a book, newspaper or other than that, for that which it entails in exposing the mention of Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) therein.
