Introspection.
Alhamdu Lillah Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and we boast that every year more and more people are coming into the fold of Islam. But as the Messenger (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: You are froth like froth on the sea.
Meaning that we would have no substance whatsoever. A great number with no voice and we wonder why?
Simple. We do not practice all aspects of the religion as Muslims. And one of these aspects that has been abandoned is introspection. Looking at oneself and judging oneself first and foremost.
A lot of Muslims think they can pray their Prayer and they are saved. And with sisters many of them think they wear a Hijab and that makes them free from error. And for this reason we as Muslims have grown in arrogance and pride and refuse to accept sincere advice.
But let us look at the way of the Salaf. It was narrated in Saheeh Bukhari that Ibn Abi Maleekah who said that he met 72 of the Companions of the Messenger (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) and all of them feared hypocrisy upon themselves.
Here we are speaking about men who Allah has chosen to be with the Messenger (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) and all of them feared being a hypocrite. So what is the case with you and me O brothers and sisters?
How many of us sit down at the end of the day and count our sins? How many of us try to be better Muslims than yesterday? How many of us try to make repentence from our sins whether they are big or small? How many of us try to follow the Sunnah strictly in all aspects of Islam? Thing is many of us fall short in this yet we think we are the best Muslims who have walked upon the face of this earth. And what is ironic is that the best Muslims after the Messengers (Alaihim As Salaam) thought that they were the worst of all people on the face of this earth. How far have we steered away from the way of the Salaf.
