Is there a difference between Sunni and Salafi?

سئل سماحة الإمام شيخ الإسلام عبد العزيز بن عبد الله بن باز -غفر الله له وأعلى درجته-:
• هل هناك -حفظكم الله- فرق بين مصطلح السلفية ومصطلح أهل السنة والجماعة ؟
السلف هم أهل السنة والجماعة، فسلف الأمة هم أهل السنة والجماعة وهم الصحابة أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأتباعه، يقال لهم: السلف؛ لأنهم تقدموا على غيرهم ويقال لهم: أهل السنة والجماعة؛ لأنهم اجتمعوا على سنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.
فالمقصود: إذا أطلق السلف الصالح فالمراد الصحابة ومن تبعهم بإحسان، وإذا ألطلق أهل السنة والجماعة فهم كذلك الصحابة وأتباعهم بإحسان، هؤلاء هم أهل السنة وهم الفرقة الناجية وهم الطائفة المنصورة المتمسكة بالقرآن والسنة.

Shaikh Ibn Baz was asked: Is any difference between Salafeeyah and Ahlus Sunnah?

 

He said: The Salaf are Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah, the Salaf of this Ummah are Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah and they (the Salaf) are the Companions of the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) and those that follow them , they are called the Salaf because they preceeded those who came before them and they are called Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah because they united upon the Sunnah of the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam).

Therefore when the Salaf (the pious predecessors) are spoken about it means the Companions and those who follow them in goodness, and if Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah is spoken about it is understood that when used one is speaking of the Companions (the Sahabah), and those who follow them in goodness, they are Ahlus Sunnah, the Saved Sect and the Aided group who hold on to the Qur’an and Sunnah.
